Don’t you hate to look for prospects? Wouldn’t you rather have people look for you and stop worrying about when your next paycheck will come in? And how is internet marketing the ‘lazy persons’ way to wealth if we had to constantly do all that?

If inventing a unique device that nobody in the world has ever seen is your idea of becoming successful in the internet, you are in for a shock. Here is why that is a bad idea:

Nobody knows who you are and therefore perceive you as untrustworthy.

That’s the hard way of doing it. Here is an easier and more effective strategy to market yourself online:

Establish yourself as an authority figure, so that people will see you as THE “go to” person.

If you gain enough credibility to have enough people see you as the authority on a given subject, your chances of having prospects hiring you or buying from you are dramatically increased.

Let me give you an example, who is the first person you think of and most likely get information from when you are researching on the subject on self improvement? You’ve probably heard of Anthony Robbins or Zig Ziglar. Here are a few others:

Cooking - Wolfgang Puck
Bodybuilding - Arnold Schwarzenegger
Martial Arts - Jackie Chan

Who’s book would you rather buy if you want to learn how to fight... Joe Blow from Idaho teaching his ‘Grand Ultimate Style of Redneck Karate’... or the back flipping, building hopping, beating up 10 HUGE guys with machine guns... JACKIE CHAN?

If you want to impress your girlfriend by cooking up something special, do you buy a book written by the dirty looking guy selling hot dogs at the street corner, or the World Class Chef Wolfgang Puck?

Most people would pick Jackie Chan and Wolfgang Puck because you’ve seen them do some incredible stuff. But you haven’t seen the ‘others’ do anything incredible yet.

Okay, maybe Joe Blow in real combat could kick Jackie Chan’s sorry butt and break his arm in three seconds. And maybe the dirty looking guy in reality could beat Wolfgang Puck in the Iron Chef competition, BUT all of that doesn’t matter because you and the world will still perceive Jackie and Wolfgang as the “go to” person in their fields.

The ‘others’ are virtually unknown and haven’t established themselves as authorities. And the reality is, the general population would most likely choose and trust products from people they are familiar with over some unknown (and therefore less trustworthy) person.

Of course most of these experts do have some advanced knowledge in their subjects that the general population doesn’t know about. Their advantage is that they have found a way of flaunting their expert knowledge by starring in movies or opening restaurants.

What are you good at? What is your passion? Do you have above average knowledge and insight on your subject that the majority doesn’t know about? If so, go out there and start establishing yourself as an authority over the internet!
