-
Television reasserted its influence over the Buzz this week. Of the three hottest articles for the past seven days, two of them cha-cha'd or crooned their way out of the small screen.

An Us Weekly item about Mario's hip-checking performance on "Dancing With the Stars" boogied to the top of the Overall section, where it narrowly beat out a PopSugar post on "American Idol." The latter complained bitterly about the singing spectacle's second-week treatment of Beatles' tunes, and indulged in the classic "Idol" commentary: David Cook is "impressive... but cocky," Amanda "still bugs," etc.

The week's third most popular article turned to another impressive but cocky realm—politics. In a Yahoo! News-hosted report, AP examined the escalating fire fight between Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. There's nothing like a good skirmish between senators to get people riled up and drive the buzz upward. Obama may have slipped in the polls this week, but he's still got momentum in Search. Seven of the week's top 10 "obama" and "clinton" queries focused on him.

Here's a rundown of the top weekly articles in some of the specific Buzz category pages…

In Sports:
John McCain's NCAA brackets? The Republican presidential candidate will share his tourney picks if you'll share yours—and include your ZIP code and email address. This may be the most obvious ploy yet to gather information on voters, but Buzz readers loved it. A USA TODAY blog post on the subject vaulted to the top of the week's sports articles, where it continues to draw clicks. It even beat out a Huffington Post piece on Tiger Woods' rumored purchase of house in the Hamptons for a cool $65 million.

In World and Sci/Tech:
On Sunday, China closed down all access to YouTube due to the site's collection of videos documenting violent political protest in Tibet. The e-blockade made international headlines and topped Buzz's World and Science/Technology categories for the week. Readers gave high marks to a Yahoo! News article about the firewall, as well as an Ars Technica post that examined the larger context of Beijing's complicated relationship with the Web.

In Business:
The week started with the shock of Bears Stearns' demeaning $2-per-share sale to JPMorgan Chase. By the end of the week, the main concern was: Who's next? An AP article on Yahoo! News ran through the possible answers to that question, and soared to the top of Business and Finance for the past seven days.

In Health:
What size is one "medium piece of fruit" really? How many leaves actually go into a "cup of lettuce"? With this practical post, FitSugar navigated the real dimensions behind dietary measurements. The nourishing article pulled in more than three times the number of votes of the next most popular article in Health this week. Our favorite detail: One cup of veggies="the size of a baseball." Batter up!

Buzz Multiplex: Meet Tyler Perry

-
In this week's three most-searched premieres, crowd-pleasing producer/directors like Judd Apatow and Tyler Perry are the ones getting their names on the Buzz marquee. Normally all other comers should just bow down and hope for matinee attendance with Perry around, but surprise buzz for an immigration tale of a boy in search of his mother has been challenging his dominance.

1. "Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns" (PG-13). A single dad got another shot at love in Perry's last celluloid outing. This time around, delicious Angela Bassett (+41%) plays a single mom meeting her paternal kin for the first time. Perry built the film specifically around Bassett, and also brought back his grandma Madea character. While Perry outdraws Basset in online popularity, neither can match cast member Sofia Vergara's appeal. The family movie of the week should see lines forming largely in the Eastern half of the United States.

2. "Under the Same Moon" (PG-13, limited release). This small sentimental film about a 9-year-old Mexican boy who gets himself smuggled into the U.S. to find his mother carries huge political undercurrents. That—and a cameo by America Ferrera ("Ugly Betty")—may explain the surprisingly hefty online attention. The film is up nearly 200% and trails "Meet the Browns" by just a few hundred searches. The limited release has drawn interest from all over, with California, Texas, Illinois, Nevada, and Arizona leading the state searches. Another surprise: While ages 13-54 have been interested, teens make up nearly a quarter of the film's lookups.

3. "Drillbit Taylor" (PG-13). The first film to roll off the Judd Apatow-Seth Rogen production powerhouse may fall with a thud into the DVD bin, given the search stupor. Three hounded high school freshmen employ a homeless, self-proclaimed vet as their bodyguard, played by Owen Wilson. The kinder, gentler MPAA rating may let teen searchers (11%) buy tickets, but scrubbing out what MTV calls Apatow/Rogen's signature "avant vulgarity" might've dampened overall interest.
